Fraud in Thurston County Auditor’s Office

On Friday, July 20, my campaign became aware that Thurston County Auditor Mary Hall is suspected of knowingly overpaid her executive assistant at least $40,000 since hiring her in October 2014. This executive assistant is also a contributor to Hall’s campaign for re-election.

The overpayment is due to the fact that Hall’s Executive Assistant does not work on Fridays. Documents obtained via public records request show that Hall’s executive assistant is compensated for eight hours each day and 40 hours each week—despite the fact that she does not work on Fridays. Records also show that Hall’s executive assistant has sent only 57 emails on Fridays between October 7, 2014 and March 15, 2018, while sending at least 2,000 emails every other business day. These documents show why Mary Hall is suspected of fraudulently overpaying her executive assistant for over three years while consciously committing time theft.

These public records come as a result of a public records request for commonly requested documents that was submitted on March 15, 2018. It has been 128 days since that request was submitted, but the response remains incomplete. The request included exact instructions on how the Thurston County Auditor could produce the records and even waived portions of the request in the interest of expediency. It is now my opinion that the Thurston County Auditor has willfully implemented stall tactics to obscure these and other unethical acts.

This fraud has been reported to the Washington State Auditor. However, Washington State Auditor Pat McCarthy is also a contributor and supporter of Hall’s re-election campaign. Therefore an independent investigation has been requested and a thorough review of all the Thurston County Auditor’s expenditures since she was elected.
